On 30 May 2013, the Center for the Study of Democracy held a roundtable on the "Challenges to public policy for the development of civil society". In her opening remarks, Dr. Maria Yordanova, Director of the Law Program of the Center for the Study of Democracy, welcomed the participants and highlighted the importance of the debate and the strategy for registry reform in Bulgaria. more »

A New Initiative to Support Re-socialization of Offenders
On 1 February 2013, the Center for the Study of Democracy (CSD) launched an initiative entitled Re-socialization of offenders in the EU: enhancing the role of the civil society (RE-SOC). Led by CSD with the financial support of the European Commission, it will be implemented jointly with Droit au Droit (Belgium), University of Applied Sciences and Arts – Dortmund (Germany), Observatory on the Penal System and Human Rights (Spain) and Law Institute (Lithuania). more »

Can a trust-based criminal policy lead to fewer crimes?
In November 2011, the European Commission supported a research project into criminal policy and the promotion of trust in justice. The project, named FIDUCIA after the Latin term for “trust”, involves research organizations from eleven countries, including the Center for the Study of Democracy. more »
 
Public Conference: Prison’s minorities in the Western Balkans
On July 9, 2011, representatives of the Center for the Study of Democracy took part in the public conference on Prison’s minorities in the Western Balkans in Tirana. The Albanian Institute for International Studies hosted the event, organised under the framework of the Network to empower volunteering work within the prison system in Europe and Western Balkans (PRISNET). more »

Public discussion: Public Trust in the Criminal Justice System – an Instrument for Penal Policy Assessment
On May 11, 2011, the Center for the Study of the Democracy organized a public discussion on Public Trust in the Criminal Justice System – an Instrument for Penal Policy Assessment. At the event the organizers presented an analysis of survey results on the Bulgarian society’s level of confidence in the criminal justice institutions, on the public attitudes towards the level of corruption in these institutions and the subjective perceptions of fear of crime. more »
