Mr. Brad Freden, Political Counselor at the US Embassy, departed from Sofia

On July 11, 2007, on the occasion of his leaving the country, CSD and friends held a going away party for the Counselor for Political and Economic Affairs of the US Embassy in Sofia Mr. Brad Freden. Brad Freden has been actively involved in supporting CSD initiatives and reforms in Bulgaria and has been widely respected among policy makers, NGOs and diplomats in Sofia.

In his address, Dr. Ognian Shentov, CSD Chairman, put an emphasis on the vision and passion of Brad Freden - vision for the role of Bulgaria and the US in a globalizing world and for the direction and pace of the reforms in Bulgaria.

Mr. Todor Tchourov, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs emphasized Brad’s input in the further development of bilateral relations. Mr. Yordan Bozhilov, Head of International Cooperation at the Bulgarian Ministry of Defense pointed at the role Brad had played at critical junctures of the development of Bulgaria as a reliable international security partner and on behalf of the Ministry he presented Brad with an honorary dirk.

Mr. Boyko Borissov, Mayor of Sofia, spoke highly of Brad’s unique combination of human touch and diplomatic skills. In response, Brad Freden thanked for the appreciation and agreed that passion and vision had been indeed necessary for the fulfillment of effective diplomatic service in Bulgaria especially in a transition period. He thanked the Mayor and the representatives of the Ministries of Defense and Foreign Affairs as well as CSD friends and expressed hope that after his departure he will remain involved with the processes in Bulgaria.

CSD’s going away present – a painting by Bulgarian painter Stefan George-Georgiev – was presented to Brad Freden by CSD Chairman Ognian Shentov.
