Elections for a New Ombudsman of Sofia
On September 23, 2004 the municipal council of Sofia elected with a secret ballot the new public mediator (ombudsman) of Sofia. Mr. Angel Stefanov is a professor in the Political Science Department at the University of National and World Economy, Sofia.

The institution of the ombudsman was introduced as a pilot initiative by Sofia municipality in 2002. The mandate of the first ombudsman of Sofia, Mrs. Antoaneta Tsoneva, expired in February, 2004. In July 2004 the municipal councilors of Sofia voted a new statute for the activities of the ombudsman.

The experience of the first ombudsman of Sofia municipality showed that the most frequent complaints submitted by citizens to the ombudsman included: use of municipal housing, illegal construction, restitution of property problems, public tenders, conflicts between car drivers and tow trucks companies removing cars in forbidden parking areas in the capital, public services, environmental problems.
