Seminar: Conflict of Interest, Good Governance and Management of the Local Authority - Civil Society Relationship
On 14 May 2010, the Center for the Study of Democracy, in conjunction with Ms. Maria Nedelcheva from the European People’s Party (EPP) and the Balkan Trust for Democracy initiative, organized a seminar on the "Conflict of interest, good governance and management of the local authority - civil society relationship”. The seminar was focused on sharing experience in legislation pertaining to conflict of interest and its application to the public-private partnership between municipalities and NGOs. more »
 
Third Advisory Group Meeting of Asia-Europe Democratisation and Justice series
On 22 and 23 February 2010, the Center for the Study of Democracy hosted The third Advisory Group Meeting of Asia-Europe Democratisation and Justice Series organized by the Asia-Europe Foundation in partnership with Hanns Seidel Foundation Indonesia. The Advisory Group includes experts from relevant international and regional organisations, NGOs and academe in the field of democratisation and justice. more »
 
Discussion on the Priorities of Judicial Reform in Bulgaria
On 8 October 2009 Center for the Study of Democracy hosted a meeting with U.S. District Judge John R. Tunheim who visited Bulgaria as part of the U.S. Department of Justice efforts to assist the reform of the Bulgarian judicial system. more »
 
CSD Delegation Visits China
From 7 to 13 September 2009 a delegation from the Center for the Study of Democracy and the Applied Research and Communications Fund visited China to discuss common achievements and challenges between Bulgaria and China in the areas of good governance and technological development. more »

The Cooperation and Verification Mechanism Three Years Later: What Has Been Done and What Is Yet to Come
On 1 January 2007 Bulgaria became a member of the European Union. However, according to the European Commission, the country’s judicial system and law enforcement bodies still lacked the necessary capacity to implement and apply the measures adopted to establish the internal market and the area of freedom, security and justice. The remaining issues warranted the establishment of a mechanism for cooperation and verification of the progress of Bulgaria to address specific benchmarks in the areas of judicial reform and the fight against corruption and organised crime. more »
 
Review of Need: Indicators of Public Confidence in Criminal Justice for Policy Assessment
In September 2009 a report, entitled Review of Need: Indicators of Public Confidence in Criminal Justice for Policy Assessment’ came out, published by the European Institute for Crime Prevention and Control, Affiliated with the United Nations (HEUNI). The publication is the first volume of the working papers of the EUROJUSTIS project, designed to provide EU institutions and Member States with new indicators for assessing public confidence in justice. It is a result of the implementation of one of the project’s specific objectives: to assess the perceived need for European social indicators of public confidence in justice for policy assessment and to examine the state of current tools. The working paper was jointly prepared and edited by experts from the Law Program of the Center for the Study of Democracy and from HEUNI, since the Center was leading the project partners’ effort for needs assessment. more »
